Report from President of the Danbury Hospital Medical Staff
William V. Begg III, MD FACEP

Medical Staff Bylaws Revision:
Integration of the Danbury Hospital and New Milford Hospital Medical Staffs in 2013 has been delayed at this time. (Please see Matt Miller’s CMO Notes above.) Nonetheless, revision of the Danbury Hospital bylaws was voted on and passed at the September 12th General Medical Staff meeting. Your feedback was very much appreciated.

Legislative Update:
Danbury Hospital Medical Staff and Fairfield County Medical Association representatives have met numerous times with various CT state representatives and senators this spring: Final legislative outcomes are important to our medical staff.

  • PA 13-217. CME requirements: Reduces frequency with which physicians must take mandatory CME topics, requiring one contact hour six topics during the first renewal period for which CME is required, and then once every six years after that. Physicians are now required to maintain CME attendance certificates for at least six years, up from three years. The state requirement for 50 hours of category 1 CME every two years has not changed.
  • PA 13-235 License renewal: Fines for practicing without a current license have increased from $500 to $5000.
  • PA 13-234 License renewal: REQUIRES, rather than allows, physicians, dentists, and other health care providers to renew their licenses on line using the DPH website
  • PA 13-297 Mandated reporters: Now a Class A misdemeanor (used to be only a fine) for failure to report suspected child abuse. The new law also makes failure to report a form of risk of injury to a child by the non-reporting provider.

Medical Staff events remaining for 2013:

  • General Medical Staff meetings:
    • November 21st
    • 5:30p start time with goal to finish meeting in under an hour
    • Reception in Robilotti room before and after each GMS meeting
  • Annual Medical Staff reception November 3rd
    • 2:00p- 4:30p at Ridgewood Country Club. New medical Staff and those at 5 year milestones marks (20+ years) will be honored

Committee Updates:
Medical Staff Nominating Committee: Slate of 2014 candidates will be presented at the November 21st GMS meeting. New bylaws stipulate that officer’s terms will be two years with the possibility of an additional two year term determined by the committee. The Vice President will now be considered the one to automatically succeed the sitting president when their term ends.

Medical Staff Finance Committee: Annual meeting will be in November. New committee formed in 2012 reviews budgetary concerns and expenditures on behalf of the medical staff.

Physician of the Year:
Congratulations to Jamie Bruno, MD of urology for winning the 2013 Fairfield County Medical Association Magida Award. This “Physician of the Year” honor recognizes those physicians under the age of 40 who have demonstrated exemplary medical care, as well as a commitment to advancing the welfare of the community through our active medical and social agenda items. The formal announcement was made at the September 12 General Medical Staff meeting. Dr. Bruno will also be recognized at the October 9th Semi-annual meeting of the Fairfield County Medical Association meeting.
