Keeping Up - What's New

IT/Cerner Update

Cerner Healthcare Integration Project (CHIP) Update

Our transformational initiative to move to a single, patient-centric and completely integrated patient clinical and financial system is now well underway. Our new system is being designed to make it easier for us to enter, find and use patient information.

The new system will support a consistent standard of care throughout WCHN, taking shape in design work sessions some of you might have already participated in. These have begun the process of tailoring the Cerner “model” system to the way we want to work in the future. Physician input will be extremely important to the shape our final system takes.

We have just begun the first of four phases of the Cerner integration, each of which will require critical input from physicians to ensure our initiative is successful.

Align Phase – Physician design input to align the new system’s clinical processes with the standard of care we want to provide throughout WCHN, across all specialties and care settings.

Engage Phase – Physician input to ensure the system is built to WCHN specifications and that testing and training incorporate the necessary elements to support the consistent standard of care we want to provide.

Activate Phase – Physician contributions to quickly identify and resolve immediate workflow process, system performance, support or other issues which arise during the initial system “Go-Live” period.

Measure Phase – Physician participation in remediating and optimizing the system over the longer term to provide the maximum benefit for patients. As during the initial Go-Live period, this includes helping to celebrate the “wins” that occur.

Throughout this intensive two-year period, we will continue to have the visible support of our leadership team, which has explicitly defined the Cerner integration as an initiative supported by the entire organization. Support for our input will come from local physician leadership, including Dr. Lew Berman, Dr. Pat Tietjen and Dr. Andrew Keller in addition to Dr. Murphy and CIO Kathy DeMatteo.
