Dr. Sohel Islam receives Doctor of Distinction Award

The 2015 Doctors of Distinction awards ceremony was held May 12, at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum, in Norwalk. The ceremony honored five of Fairfield County’s most influential medical personnel.

WCHN’s Sohel Islam, MD, a cosmetic and plastic surgeon with Advanced Specialty care received the Humanitarian Award in recognition of his dedication to providing specialized surgical care to children and adults in third world countries. Since 2000, Dr. Islam has annually volunteered with Hand Help, traveling to underserved areas of Central America providing surgical care for people with hand problems, birth defects, and traumatic injuries, restoring function and normalcy to their lives.

“In a typical week, we will evaluate 100 patients, many of whom we will subsequently operate on to improve their lives. The scope of surgery includes congenital hand problems, traumatic injuries, burn injuries and other birth defects. The team includes surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses and residents. The work days are often longer than in America, but the results are extremely rewarding,” said Dr. Islam.

A graduate of Cornell University Medical School, Dr. Islam is affiliated with both Danbury and New Milford hospitals.
