Danbury Hospital's Speech Pathology Department has expanded diagnostic services for patients with swallowing impairment. The department has been performing Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) studies for inpatients since October 2006. With the improvements in clinical decision making for patients with swallowing impairment, FEES studies are now offered to outpatients.
The FEES study is an alternative to the Modified Barium Swallow study. The study utilizes a fiberoptic laryngoscope, which is passed transnasally to the hypopharynx. At this point, the larynx and surrounding structures can be viewed. Food and liquids are given to the patient and the swallow is observed.
Dr. David Oelberg, Department of Medicine, Section of Pulmonary Disease oversees the FEES program. A pulmonologist will be directly involved in review and interpretation of the FEES studies completed.
